We announced today that after six transformative years, Kelly Schmitt has decided to leave Benevity, and that Christopher Maloof will be joining as our new CEO. You can get more detail in the press release.I wondered about whether there is a better word than ‘bittersweet’, but it’s actually pretty evocative and descriptive of my feelings on Kelly’s news. On the one hand, I’m extremely happy for her that she is going to take a break and invest in herself and her family; I did it a couple of times in my career and it was critical in filling up the tank to take on the next phase. On the other hand, I’ve worked closely with Kelly for close to six years, and as trite as it may sound, I will miss her dearly.During that time, I’ve had a ringside seat to watch her grow and develop - both as a person and a professional - at a pace that many should envy. I know with intimacy how difficult the job of leading a company like Benevity can be: balancing the hybrid goals of profit and purpose in the context of a post-pandemic world with five fairly diverse generations in the workforce and at the scale Benevity has become…it is much easier said than done. And she did it with indefatigable energy, resilience and a people-first, client service-oriented mindset. I (among many) will be forever grateful to have had her in the seat. I’m excited to see where she lands in her next gig after taking the time that she needs. She has created a nicely paved road not only for her next CEO role, but hopefully for many other of the great women leaders out there who are not yet first time CEO’s but should be.Thank you for making Benevity better, my friend. At the same time, I’m excited about the future and getting a person like Chris to lead the ‘Little Goodness Engine that Could’. Many of you have heard me wax on about ‘ages and stages’ and ‘horses for courses’. It’s not exactly Harvard Business Review worthy but there is a certain reality to it. Going from nothing to something is different than going from something to something pretty big which is different again than going from something pretty big to something huge (am I profound, or what!). The world needs Benevity to be huge, and Chris has the skillset, experience and mindset to help get us there. While I know he has a ton of experience with the type of scale to which we aspire, and a product/go to market background that will help Benevity continue to define our category, he also comes at it by all (raving) reports with a profound belief in the power of people, individual empowerment and collective culture.I look forward to watching (and with the rest of our Board and investors, hopefully helping) him lead Benevity, its people and its client communities to the heights to which we all aspire.#ceo #socialimpact #culture

It’s been a momentous few days at Benevity—for our community, our people, and the ESG tech market.Last week, on GivingTuesday, we processed over $112 million dollars in donations in support of more than 43,000 causes in 108 countries. That is more than double what was donated on GivingTuesday in 2020, which was a record year for charitable giving. It was awesome to see so many companies and their people stepping up at such a challenging time for the world.I remember in the early days of Benevity, one of our developers hooking our API up to a large red light that would whirl in our one-room office when one of our clients made a donation. We had so few companies and such modest donation volume that we actually connected different sounds for different clients and could discern among them.We celebrated our small steps and dreamed of greater scale and impact.Fast forward a decade or so and in calculating the donation rate during the busiest hours of the day, we found $2,592 was being donatedevery second(without any processing glitches, I might add!).Our clients threw in 135,000 volunteer hours on the day for good measure. It’s heartening progress but there is so much yet to do and so much more to come from The Little Goodness Engine That Could…This morning, my rock-star successor CEO,Kelly Schmitt, announced that Benevity is acquiring Alaya, a fast-growing European-based tech firm with an innovative and easy-to-deploy platform that engages employees in volunteering and environmental and wellness challenges. We are excited to be welcoming CEO André Abreu and his passionate crew, who are as committed as we are to leveraging the power of corporations to catalyze collective action and impact on a global scale. As more stakeholders expect companies to execute on their ESG strategies and help solve some of the pressing challenges facing our world, there’s no doubt that scalable, global technology will become a critical part of the corporate toolkit. And now with Alaya, Benevity is even better positioned to help more companies across the globe deliver measurable impact in locally relevant ways—to their people, to business and to society at large.#impactinvesting #esg #tech #ceo #corporatesocialresponsibility

It's been a while since I've posted here, but permit me a moment for a bit of a humble brag about my teenager, Benevity. She is growing up fast and getting recognized...1. Two weeks ago, Benevity made Fortune's Impact 20 list. This is a list of venture- and private-equity-backed startups. While these aren't your typical, established Fortune companies, the ones on this list are said to be deploying the creative tools of capitalism with an outsized positive impact—making people’s lives better even as they grow. We are honoured to be included in this list of companies, many of which help companies deliver on their #ESG (Environment, Social, Government) strategies in a tangible, actionable and authentic way.2. Last week, Benevity was honoured as a Cult Brand in the Emerging category by The Gathering Summit.Yet again, we are a small but mighty brand that was selected from more than 800 heavy hitters (like McDonald's, TikTok, DoorDash and more). Cult Brands are said to have "more substance than sizzle" and have won the devotion of customers worldwide. When we started Benevity more than 13 years ago, we always said "RFOBs" (Raving Fans of Benevity) were our number one KPI. And they still are--it's because of our clients, causes and partners that we are able to help even more organizations do the right thing. Here's a little video of the Cult Brand honorees. If you look closely and don't blink your eyes, you might spot a few dancers in the Benevity office.#impactinvesting #dotherightthing #purposedrivenleadership

At the risk of being yet another person stating the obvious, it has been quite a year! Some of what has gone in the world at the beginning of 2021 suggests that we will continue to be tested as a society, but we’ve shown ourselves to be a resilient bunch and are no doubt up to the task. But I’m not posting today to talk about COVID or politics, I’m here to share some good news.#leadership #corporatediversity #corporatepurpose

A lot has happened in our global village recently: the mass Black Lives Matter movement, a humanitarian crisis in Yemen, a rise in the number of COVID cases, wildfires in Arizona and New Mexico, and political turmoil from the upcoming US election. These issues are not just top of mind for anyone watching the news or in the nonprofit sector. They’re top of mind for business. And what’s different is that it’s not just CSR teams driving action. Corporate purpose is having a moment. Here's some thoughts on this, along with a couple of other announcements at Benevity.#purposedrivenbusiness #corporatesocialresponsibility

The events of the past week mark a crucial moment in time: the beginning of a movement toward addressing racial inequity with real action coming from companies, their people and the public. Amidst the difficulties and pain, we’ve observed an outpouring of support with more than $50 million being donated to causes that support civil rights, freedom and racial equity. And, this is just days into what needs to be a concerted effort at rewiring our society around equity.#blacklivesmatter #stopracism #leadwithpurpose
