Someone gave this to my daughter for Christmas, and we 'played' (solved) it last night. The box says 45-60 minutes. Three and a half hours later I needed a couple of Advil.
I wasn't going to give away any spoilers.

Usually at around 52 minutes, Detective Columbo comes in with “There’s just one thing I can’t figure out…”.

I don't think you are ready to tackle the zodiac's riddles yet.

If that game is anything like the mysteries Mrs. German watches, I would be announcing Who Done It (loudly and incorrectly) ten minutes in. Then changing my answer five minutes later, and denying I’d ever said different.

Yeah, my daughter was convinced that it was one of the other suspects, and she was ready to open the envelope. Her proof was based on visual evidence, which I explained was deceiving because of the perspective and probably a red herring. I also said, "We haven't completely ruled out [another suspect]." Going back through the clues again, it became obvious who the guilty party was.

I though this was going to be an interesting gig story.

We did that one in a few hours last year, definitely longer than the suggested time. Lol.

No. But, sadly, I knew a local guitarist and singer who died of a heart attack at a bar gig a few years ago. His band had just finished up a set, and he told his band mates that he wasn't feeling well. He slumped over a pool table and he was gone just like that. It was terrible.

This took me under 10 minutes to figure out the encryption method. It is kind of staring you right in the face.
But then I do acrostics and cryptoquotes often, so it is sort of in my wheelhouse.

I started with the wrong one, the one that didn't have the key/clue written on it.

So is this a game you can only play once? Or is it more like Cluedo where it's a different killer each time?

It's a box with a single mystery, evidence, and a sealed envelope that you open when you're certain that you've solved it.
It has things that are worth keeping, which could be useful (e.g., a bottle opener), or just momentos to put on your desk at work, in your man cave, she shed, etc.

But they each have a key code written on them….
(Or did you maybe add the code to the other one ?)

They do some neat things to strengthen the story immersion. For example, one of the clues is a phone number, and if you call the number, it's a suspect's voice mail.

Yeah, I wrote the code on the other. I probably should have blanked that out too. It's not like I've said exactly how to decode the whole thing though. You definitely need a notepad. I just wrote it out on the envelopes, for my fiancee and daughter, when I was done scribbling.

A murder at the local dive bar. A mysterious, masked figure. A small town full of suspects. When owner Nick Webster falls from a cliff behind his roadside tavern, his death is ruled an accident. But one of his employees suspects foul play ...
