Blogging about music requires a certain amount of panting by definition, but it's not an overstatement to say that The Stooges were one of those bands that changed the entire game. So it's deeply sad to acknowledge the passing of guitarist Ron Asheton, who was found dead in his Ann Arbor home yesterday. (Details are still scattershot, but he looks to have died of a heart attack and, chillingly, to have done so a few days before he was found.) The founding Stooges lineup—often eclipsed by its charismatic frontman, Iggy Pop—included Asheton, his brother Scott on drums, and Dave Alexander on bass. The group's best work (The Stooges, Fun House) not only gave the burgeoning punk genre some of its most classic expressions ("I Wanna Be Your Dog," "T.V. Eye," below) but also showed generations of alienated kids a snarling alternative to the milquetoast mainstream. (No exaggeration to say that when I heard "Dog" for the first time at 14, I was literally shocked—in no small part because of the rancor of Asheton's splenetic guitar.) Some of punk's antics seem weathered and stupid in retrospect; take, for example, Asheton's account of wearing Nazi regalia and flying a Nazi flag, seemingly without any real point, at Iggy's wedding to a Jewish woman nicknamed "Potato Girl." (That and more from Legs McNeil's excellent oral history of punk, Please Kill Me—and, by the way, no word on whether Potato minded.) But though the posture may have aged poorly, the music sounds fresh on each listen, an...

The term "godfather of punk" is one that's too often abused: The genre can't possibly have had 189,958 progenitors, could it? And bandying it about too lightly only cheapens it when referring to a musician for whom that really was the case.
