rally, and bomb making materials at his home. the fbi confirms the gunman's father had purchased the ar 15 style rifle that was found near his body, though it's not clear if that rifle was given or taken without permission. investigators say the family is cooperating. >> and tonight, president biden delivered just his third oval office address. speaking for six minutes, calling for americans to reject political violence. >> we debate and disagree. we compare and contrast the character of the candidates, the records, the issues, the agenda, the vision for america. but in america, we resolve our differences at the battle box. you know, that's how we do it. at the battle box, not with bullets. >> this is the third time the president has addressed the nation in the aftermath of the attempted assassination of mr. trump, and there are still many unanswered questions from yesterday's shooting. >> not much is known about the 20 year old gunman, thomas matthew crooks, or what motivated him to carry out the

violence. another big question is how the secret service allowed him to get so close to the rally. armed with a rifle on a rooftop, fox's cb cotton shows us what we know so far and explains how security is preparing for the start of the rnc. >> former president donald trump, arriving in milwaukee sunday night for the start of the republican national convention. >> take a look at what happened. >> only about 24 hours after the attempt on his life saturday in pennsylvania. the fbi believes the shooter acted alone and says he had little to no social media presence. the suspect was not previously known to law enforcement and had no known history of mental health issues. meanwhile, the secret service is investigating how the shooter was able to get so close and into position without their agents noticing. >> we're like, hey, right here on the roof, we can see him from right here. i'm thinking to myself, i'm like, why is trump still speaking? why have they not pulled him off the stage?

10:04 pm

>> nobody should be within that area armed, much less crawling on the rooftop of a high of a tall building, the agency coming under an incredible amount of scrutiny for what's being viewed as an inexcusable security breach. >> despite that, they maintain they are fully prepared to secure the rnc this week. >> we are confident in the security plans that are in place for this event, and we're ready to go. >> president biden has ordered an independent investigation into the shooting, urging americans to stay calm at a time when the country is on edge. >> the political record in this country has gotten very heated. it's time to cool it down. we all have a responsibility to do that here in pennsylvania. >> the governor has ordered flags flown at half staff in honor of the 50 year old firefighter cory comparator, who was killed. his family says he died a hero shielding his wife and daughters from the gunfire in pennsylvania, cb cotton, fox news former first lady melania trump released an open letter

shared on social media, it reads in part, when i watched that violent bullet strike my husband donald, i realized my life and barron's life were on the brink of devastating change. >> i am grateful to the brave secret service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband. he goes on to say to the families of the innocent victims who are now suffering from this heinous act, i humbly offer my sincerest sympathy. your need to summon your inner strength for such a terrible reason saddens me. >> well, as the investigation continues, the republican national convention is set to open in just a matter of hours, and officials for the rnc and the trump campaign have called it business as usual. >> now, tonight, we do know of at least one major change donald trump saying in an interview that he has rewritten his speech for the convention. ktvu political reporter greg lee in studio with us. and, greg, both trump and biden really both calling for unity tonight.

10:06 pm

>> yeah, that's certainly been the message. and mike, claudine, that speech not expected to be until thursday night, the last night of the event on the eve of the republican national convention, delegates and party officials rallying behind the former president. no question the attempted killing of mr. trump, rattling the nation and changing the tone of this presidential race. barricades went up and additional law enforcement resources arrived to fiserv forum in milwaukee, wisconsin, for the republican national convention. security under scrutiny after the assassination attempt on former president trump. >> i am seeing it because we expected to see it, because the convention starting tomorrow, have i seen extraordinary things, not not yet. california's rnc national committeeman, sean steele, spoke to us from milwaukee. >> he said attendees are united and fired up as the party prepares to formally nominate trump for the third consecutive time. >> it's energized in a couple of ways. one, you know, the relief that it wasn't like the life changing worst type of experience that would have

10:07 pm

divided this country irreparably. two we, there's a lot of people that love trump that don't vote. this is going to harden the cell. >> secret service and local law enforcement said there's no change to their security measures. and they're confident in their planning. >> there's no known specific articulated threat to the rnc or any specific individual attending. as you'd expect after the event yesterday, we've seen an uptick in social media, chatter, people talking about what happened, mr. trump told the washington examiner. >> he's completely rewritten his convention speech and will focus on national unity. >> i have no doubt they'll criticize my record and offer their own vision for this country. the power to change america should always rest in the hands of the people, not in the hands of would be assassin. >> president biden shared a similar sentiment in a rare oval office address sunday. experts say this is a remarkable moment in our political history, and it presents a critical stage for mr. trump. >> there's an opportunity for him to try to unite the country

10:08 pm

and use the convention as a way of sort of moving beyond, you know, this, this, this really dangerous moment in our politics. >> and for mr. biden, what people like about him is his empathy. >> what people like about him is his humanity. so, interestingly enough, this is a unique moment for president biden, because this is the moment that president biden is most suited for. corey cook, political science professor at saint mary's college, hopes americans heed the call to lower the temperature, but worries the heated race could make it a fleeting moment. our politics has been organized at least for the last eight years, very much around negative partizan polarization that the main argument for the republicans is anti-democrat. the main argument for the democrats is anti-republican. >> now underscoring the message of unity at the convention. mr. trump's major challenger during the primary, nikki haley, is set to speak at the convention on tuesday. president biden said during his remarks tonight he will continue with his campaign plans this week in an effort to provide counter-programming in this very heated race that is less than four months away. >> such a critical moment for

10:09 pm

the country going into this convention. talk more about the tone. what do you expect from the republican party as they set the tone, not just for this convention, but in the weeks ahead as we get into the democratic national convention? yeah. >> and those are the conversations i've been having today with republican officials. right. this is not just about former president trump's speech. this is about the days leading up to his speech. what will tomorrow look like as they try to set their agenda for what their campaign is? while also making sure that message of unity that this is less about president biden and kind of toning down the rhetoric and uniting the nation, and more about what they want to do, is there an idea to that? >> there is time. there will be a vice presidential pick that is announced and speeches and major announcements, but there is still time before november to highlight differences without it being this week and this time. >> yeah. and let's be clear, number one, the most anticipated speech this week is not necessarily of mr. trump. it's whoever he picks to be his vp. and who knows if those plans were derailed by that shooting and that we saw on saturday. but also very much four months is a

10:10 pm

very long time in election politics and in timing. so a lot could change in that time. so certainly they want to set the agenda this week. republicans do then look forward to the democrats convention. >> do you think do you think, greg, donald trump would even come out tomorrow and like a surprise appearance just address it, get it, you know, talk about it, set the tone there. >> and i mean, i think there's been a lot of that. right. because when he walked off of that stage or was guided off the stage with secret service, that iconic photo that we will be talking about for decades and centuries, and him getting off the plane today and saying he was going to delay his trip to wisconsin, but he decided to be there. his party wants to see him. they want to see him active. they want to see him leading this because they very much have gotten in line behind him. >> but both parties want to see both leaders in front of this too, so expect to see the president also making sure that that he makes an appearance as well. right. >> and democrats have very much seen that in president biden. and remember, during this time before this happened, we were talking about democrats lining up against joe biden to get off of the ticket, asking him to

10:11 pm

step aside. but that conversation is completely gone away during this time. and rightfully so. during this critical moment when the nation needs to unite and you're hearing that from both leaders, you wonder what will happen in the days and the weeks to come. >> will it return with the same gusto or will it not? yeah. that's right. okay. greg lee, thanks so much. >> thank you. and wisconsin's governor tony evers is asking the secret service to widen the no gun zone around the republican national convention. the governor says he wants them to immediately reconsider a decision that allows guns within the convention. soft perimeter. at a news conference today, the secret service said it has not made any changes to its security plan following yesterday's shooting. california is sending 61 officers to the convention, a move that has been planned since the month of may. this does include 40 members of the california highway patrol and police officers from bakersfield, fresno and long beach. the office of emergency services says california officers will be helping with crowd management and traffic control, as leaders from both
